The Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club of Northwest has decided to start their own food pantry, or the providing of food to those who do not have it. Their inspiration was to provide students at the school with healthier options to offset the habit of eating unhealthy foods such as fast food. The HOSA club has previously done food drives, however, this is their first substantial food pantry.

Currently, the club is requesting mostly healthy food that are non-perishable, such as canned and boxed foods. In the future, the club is hoping to use the school’s greenhouse and partner with stores such as Sam’s Club and Three Square to help support the efforts.

Firstly, they plan on doing a food drive to kick off the pantry, with a food drive planned before the winter break. The club plans to put the list of requested food items on the 5 Star app. The end goal for the project is to create a sustainable food pantry so that when the seniors graduate the club can keep supporting the pantry. The club historian, Ryan Nolan, said that “For some students, the school lunch is all they get to eat, but hopefully we can help them take home healthy foods to help support themselves and their families”.
